MADARIPUR: The house of a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader was vandalised by an angry mob in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Sunday morning after a controversial video allegedly involving him went viral on social media.

The incident took place in Paschim Charkamarkandi village of Nilkhi Union, where several hundred men and women reportedly gathered and damaged the house of Taizul Islam, who is involved in local politics of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to local sources, a video allegedly showing Taizul engaged in an immoral act recently circulated on social media, triggering widespread discussion, criticism and anger in the area.

Some locals alleged that such activities were damaging the reputation of their village. The vandalism reportedly took place amid the ensuing public outrage. However, the extent of the damage to the house could not immediately be confirmed.

Earlier, on October 27, the Shibchar upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami issued a press release announcing Taizul's removal from all organisational activities of the party's Nilkhi Union unit.

The statement said allegations of activities contrary to moral values involving him had surfaced on social media. It added that further organisational action would be taken in accordance with party rules if the allegations were proven.

Meanwhile, in a post on his personal Facebook account, Taizul claimed that the woman seen in the circulated video was his wife.

Contacted over the incident, Shibchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain said a team from the Nilkhi Police Outpost visited the scene after receiving information and assessed the situation.

He said police would investigate the matter and take necessary action.
